Trustees

Carol Bosworth

Carol Bosworth is Trelya’s Vice Chair. She founded the first ever Surestart in Cornwall and is a former foster carer. Carol is a local resident and is passionate about meeting the needs of children, young people and families across the community.

Emma Favata

Emma Favata

Emma Favata is a barrister specialising in civil claims against the police and public authorities, inquests and public law. Emma was part of the 17-strong Garden Court team who, along with other lawyers for the families of those who died at Hillsborough, were awarded the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Award following their role in the Hillsborough Inquests.

Katharine Heron MBE

Katharine Heron MBE is Emeritus Professor of Architecture at the University of Westminster. Head of the Department of Architecture from 1997 to 2014, she was actively engaged in initiatives to change architectural education. In 1977 she co-founded the Mudchute Farm on the Isle of Dogs, before working returning to architectural practice with Julian Feary.  

Katharine lives in Zennor, Cornwall where she grew up, and was awarded an MBE in 2015 for her services to Architecture and Higher Education.

Rod James

Rod James

Rod James has been a trustee for over 10 years and is Chair. He was head teacher of Humphry Davy School, the 11 to 16 comprehensive that serves the area from which most of Trelya’s young people come.

He retired in 2008 after 34 years in education and sees his involvement in Trelya as a continuation of that work.

Cornelius Olivier

Cornelius Olivier was a Labour Cornwall Councillor for Penzance Central May 2013 – May 2021. He also stood as Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for St. Ives in the 2015 General Election.  He now works for the Humans Project at Disability Cornwall enabling hospital discharges and supporting vulnerable people to thrive in the community.

Anthony Penhaul

Anthony Penhaul

Anthony Penhaul has been a Trelya trustee since 2006 and been Treasurer since 2007

He has had a long and successful career in education, spending 33 years in secondary education in both London and Cornwall.

As a Millennium Award winner, Antony spent a short period as Project Manager with the youth development charity, Raleigh International, working in rural Ghana, West Africa. He has strong community links and has been a parish & district councillor. He has varied interests and   is currently running a series of marathons!

Nigel Walker

Nigel Walker was one of Trelya’s founder Trustees, and was Chair from 2002 – 2007.

He has been a farmer in Cornwall since the early 1980’s and was Chairman of his local NFU branch.

He was elected to Cornwall County Council in 2002 and served as Portfolio holder for children and young people from 2003 – 2006, and for Adult Social Services and Health from 2006 – 2009.

Nigel retired from politics in 2009 but remains closely involved with a variety of community work and social care issues.

Jill Try

Jill Try

Jill Try has taught across all Key Stages specialising in Special Educational Needs. Until her retirement, Jill was Manager of Penwith Education Out of School Service, which provides tuition, both in the home and Centre, for those children unable to access mainstream education. These children may have been excluded from school or have life limiting or life shortening illness.

Crin Whelan

Crin Whelan (BEM, NPQICL, MA (Ed), PG Dip Social Work) was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2013 for her services to children. Crin is the Disabled Children’s Early Help Team Manager with Cornwall Council and she has 20 years teaching experience in Early Years and Primary Schools and 12 years’ experience of multi-agency development including St Ives Children’s Centre and Penzance Children’s Centre between 2006 and 2012. Since 2012 Crin has worked with disabled children and their families across Cornwall. Crin has been a school governor over the past 20 years at her local primary school.

Sara Davey

Sara has been working in education for nearly forty years. Sara started teaching in the Midlands and moved to Cornwall twenty years ago to become a Headteacher of a Secondary school in Penzance. She has continued working in education in a voluntary capacity and is a Trustee of two different secondary schools and a Member of the Board for a West Cornwall Multi Academy Trust. Sara is strongly committed to social justice and equality issues and believes that the work undertaken by Treyla over the years has been a beacon of excellence in Cornwall.

Gilly Gallagher

Gilly is a former estate agent who currently divides her time between London and Penzance. Gilly brings event management skills to the board, as she is highly experienced at coordinating fundraising events for the Worshipful Company of Pewterers and other organisations she supports. Gilly joined the Trustees as she thinks Trelya was such a brilliant, well run, small charity, with committed people doing such a great job.

Philippa Knight

Philippa is a former children’s solicitor appointed by the Principal Registry of the Family Divison and The High Court to act for children in all areas of London between 1995 and 2010. Philippa represented parents and extended family members in complex care/ supervision proceeding. She holds a post graduate diploma in child studies from Kings College London 2001.Philippa moved to Penzance in 2010 to open a local tourist business.

Caroline White

Caroline White

Caroline White has many years experience of working in the local voluntary sector including as a former Project Development Officer working with Breadline and the YMCA. She has a proven track record of working with the Penzance community including having served on Penzance Town Council and Penwith District Council and having previously held the position of Penzance Mayor. She has been a school governor at Pensans school and served on the board of Penwith Housing Association.
