Gallos (the Cornish word for power and ability) is Trelya’s award winning youth work programme which also provides wrap around family support.
The project delivers a range of workshops, drop-ins, support sessions and access to mainstream activities. We are relationship focussed, hands-on and creative: we’re on the school run, in classrooms, running after school clubs and groups, hosting breakfast clubs, 1-1 sessions and spending valuable time listening to and talking with parents. We are always advocating and striving to ensure children and families are supported to overcome that systemic barriers and inequalities that trap so many people in challenging circumstances.
Activities are varied and inclusive, for example creative arts sessions, music, dance, drama, residential trips, advice, practical support, work, training and educational support. We work to help integrate young people into their community, whilst also broadening their horizons beyond expectation. Gallos strives to show young people that they are full of incredible potential and can shape their own future. Gallos works alongside all family members to ensure that there is a holistic and dynamic intervention which leaves a positive legacy for future generations.
Mental health and wellbeing is a key focus, our work is needs led, ensuring that our children, young people and families have access to what they need – when they need it .This is long term work, offering over a decade of support and intervention. We’re dedicated, we listen deeply, and do whatever is necessary.
A key element of this project is working with partner services such as health, education, and social care to identify and remove barriers to engagement with young people taking the lead in developing inclusive approaches.
“Trelya has grown into an organisation where flexibility and responsiveness are defining elements of the organisational culture. Because of the complex, ever-changing needs of young people, Trelya places emphasis on deeply embedded listening”.
The Centre For Youth Impact, Independent Evaluation, June 2020
Embedded into all Trelya’s core services are:
- Crisis support
- Wraparound whole family support
- Partnership working
Trelya provides immediate solutions to crises (including safeguarding, evictions, conflict and food poverty).
Intensive family work which connects each family member to relevant resources, and supports them in overcoming individual obstacles in their own lives, whenever the need arises. We know from experience that a whole family approach has a more sustained and positive impact on health, wellbeing and life outcomes.
Trelya works closely with partners from across the locality and has developed its 3 storey community centre in the heart of Penzance East into a hub from which 20+ statutory and voluntary sector organisations deliver support services. After 1 year of engagement with Trelya 80% of children, young people & families who previously experienced barriers to support services are engaged in at least two new services
In addition to the core services delivered through Gallos, we also deliver a series of specialist projects each year, which develop specific skills and provide positive developmental experiences.
Examples include:
Beaches – funded by Aviva Community Fund, Beaches worked with children and young people to develop social and life skills through an outdoor activity programme that explored the Cornish coastline and countryside.
Smuggled – funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund Smuggled developed research and digital skills by exploring Cornwall’s smuggling heritage.
Pass The Mic – funded by The Listening Fund, Pass The Mic explored creative ways of amplifying young people’s voices.
Mocktails – funded by ‘Crimebeat’ Mocktails explored and addressed under-age alcohol issues though a alcohol free cocktail and games night.
