About Trelya
Trelya (the Cornish word for ‘change’), is an award-winning charity working to improve mental health, wellbeing, and enable positive change in West Cornwall’s most under resourced communities.
We know from experience that the children, young people and families living in our communities are unique and skilled individuals with incredible potential. Trelya creates opportunities to fulfil that potential through provision of a nursery (rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted), an award-winning youth work and mentoring programme and ‘Gul,’ our highly successful employment and training programme. Children and young people from Trelya have gone on to do incredible things – from exhibiting at the Saatchi Gallery in London to playing football for Cornwall and studying at University to become a qualified medical professional.
We work holistically with all family members which ensures change is deep rooted, achievable, and sustainable.

- How We Do It
Trelya tackles the structural inequalities and barriers which fuel cycles of deprivation head on. We aim to equip children and families with the skills and resources they need to break free and build positive, happy, healthy and fulfilling futures.
We aim to ensure that children and families have fair and equal access to health, education, food, warmth and safety. We persevere, and together, no matter what – we get there.
Learning from over 20 years of grass roots experience we ensure our organisational aims are always led by the needs of our community. Our responses are innovative, tailored, and deliver what is really needed to enable long term, sustainable difference.
We aim to find and build on often undiscovered inner strength and resilience. Every person is treated as an individual, we unlock their core assets and use these to ignite hope, ambition and fulfilment.
Children and adults access up to 15 hours (and sometimes more) of face to face, direct support each week through the following three services:
Skylar - Our ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted registered Early Years Service provides family work and individualised support to children and families from pre-birth - 4. This includes working with children and families to ensure each child begins primary school with all the social, emotional, academic and creative skills that they need to thrive and reach their full potential.
Gallos - Trelya’s award-winning youth work programme provides 12 years of support through school & college for each child transitioning from Skylar. Each child accesses a diverse and individually tailored weekly programme of asset-based activities that combine sports, arts, community engagement and travel to develop essential life and social skills, alongside real, relevant, inclusive & accessible "issue based" education. The programme includes weekly mentoring, group & family work led by a team of specialist / multidiscipline Trelya workers.
Gul Skills Development Programme - Designed for and by the parents of children engaged with our Skylar Early Years Service, Gul is A 6-month holistic programme that enables those aged 18+ to build positive futures for themselves and their families, progressing towards employment, training and self-development goals. This project is funded by Community Led Local Development and Cornwall Council. Since the start of Gul, 83% of individuals on the project have moved into further education, employment or training, breaking the cycle of intergenerational long-term unemployment.
Woven into all the above 3 programmes is crises intervention through which the Trelya team works with families to avert or navigate crisis, providing immediate solutions to challenges such as homelessness, and food poverty.
Whilst many people think of Cornwall as a holiday destination of sandy beaches and sunshine, the reality for many of those who live here is very different.
The county of Cornwall is one of the poorest areas in Northern Europe.
Many of those who engage with Trelya are experiencing social and economic challenges on a par with the most challenged inner city communities of London and Manchester, yet do not have access to adequate support. Trelya works to change this.
Our programmes, activities and projects are specifically designed to equip families and individuals to build positive aspirations and grow happy, fulfilling, safe futures.
We take a ‘360-degree holistic approach’ considering and working within all areas of each family’s life - working with them at home, nursery, school, out in the community and further afield - providing consistency and a vital link between each area of their lives.
Uniquely, our interventions are not time dependent - meaning families can (and do) access Trelya’s support over the long term. Our unique model of working enables us to begin working with each child from pre-birth and journey with them through primary school, secondary school and into adolescence and adulthood.
Our longterm approach enables new, more positive behaviours to embed and take root. As choice, knowledge, opportunities and aspiration increase, mental health and wellbeing can improve significantly. Families become healthier, happier and able to transmit new, positive behaviours to the next generation.
