In 2022 Trelya upgraded the Lescudjack Centre to provide an exciting youth café and community arts space for children, young people and families and a community café and training kitchen. Two rooms in the Centre were renovated and kitchen equipment provided through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, Bernard Sunley Foundation, the Clothworkers’ Foundation. Community Led Local Development (CLLD), Cornwall Council and Cornwall Community Foundation also helped to fund the furniture for the café and additional kitchen equipment.
About this project…
Two existing rooms were converted at Trelya to create two new exciting spaces – A Youth Café and Community Arts Space and a Community Kitchen, Café and Training Hub.
The Social Room / Youth Café and Community Arts Space
An exciting Gul youth café and community arts space provides a brilliant creative space for the young people and families we work with. The children, young people and families were instrumental in all elements of project design and the space is used to inspire and support those we work with at Trelya.
The space enables children, young people and their families to lead, develop and engage in new, innovative, engaging arts and health-based experiences and opportunities that grow essential life skills, inspiration, empowerment and awareness helping them take key steps towards reaching their full potential and significantly improving their life outcomes.
This room features a light installation from the highly acclaimed Peter Freeman.
The Daisy Room / Community Café & Training Kitchen
The Daisy Room was upgraded to provide a commercial training kitchen and vibrant community café which opened early in 2023. The café, accessible by the community, and used to train volunteers with the aim of helping them become work ready for the hospitality sector, has become the heart of the centre. It is often the starting point for those engaging with the centre as it provides a friendly and safe space for people to come and be first introduced to what Trelya, and other supporting organisations which use the centre, can provide.
This project was funded through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development – the Regional Development Fund for England. The activity supported by the project was to renovate two rooms and provide equipment for a commercial training kitchen for local people, providing a community café and hub, and training space.
