Nerth is designed to benefit children, young people and families across West Cornwall who are impacted by mental health issues and multiple life challenges. The project builds on learning from and the success of Trelya’s previous Duchy Health funded project West Cornwall Heartbeats which implemented a whole family approach to enabling families at high risk of or already experiencing poor heart health, to make long term changes that enable healthy heart lifestyles.
Nerth is delivering a 12 month holistic, intensive, weekly programme of engaging activities that enable families impacted by or at risk of poor mental health to improve and manage their mental health needs.
Nerf works alongside families to:
- Provide increased awareness and understanding of mental health conditions, treatment and support services.
- Introduce and identify sustainable techniques and methods for managing mental health and building individualised Mental Health Toolkits (activities and resources designed to focus on physical health, relationships, mindset and self-care). Mental Health Toolkit will be designed to help families manage mental health conditions, reduce the severity of symptoms, and boost overall well-being.
- Remove barriers and improving access to mental health treatment and support.
- Significantly reducing stigma and misinformation around mental health. - reducing social isolation and building a sense of connection, unity and improved understanding of mental health across the community.
- Reduce the negative impact of Covid-19 on the mental health of vulnerable/socially excluded communities.
Weekly activities include developing healthy habits for positive mental health; foods that boost mood and energy; self-care on a budget; mindfulness; depression and exercise; benefits of the natural world; well-being and creative activities; the importance of sleep and emotional first aid.
The Gul Skills Community Hub will include remodelling part of, and upgrading, our Lescudjack Centre over the next 2 years (until 31st March 2025). New windows, flooring, heating, solar energy, the creation of a new floor with learning rooms, recording studio and IT equipment will be included.
This project will also deliver the Gul Skills Project which works to equip local people with basic skills to help them move towards living wage employment or further education and training. This includes intensive support with Maths, English, and digital skills, vocational qualifications, life skills and health and wellbeing support.
The third strand of the project is the Gul Skills Café which will deliver skills and training through the centre’s new community café and kitchen to prepare people for work in the hospitality and catering industry, which is experiencing severe skills shortages.
